Amin Nasser, chief executive of the world’s largest oil company Saudi Aramco, recently called on nations to “abandon the fantasy” to phase out fossil fuels, adding that the transition to renewable energy sources is “visibly failing”. However, the latest science on climate change is unequivocal: the world must eliminate fossil fuel-based energy systems – and fast. NDC ASPECTS' members Harro van Asselt, Lauri Peterson, and Panagiotis Fragkos authored a new article in The Conversation on international agreements for limiting the supply of fossil fuels and their impacts on global economy.
Almost 100,000 people came to COP28. But compared to this number, the outcome of the summit appears modest. The conference in Dubai was nevertheless important. An opinion article by Wolfgang Obergassel of Wuppertal Institute, coordinator of NDC ASPECTS.
NDC ASPECTS members Théo Rouhette and Dirk-Jan van de Ven (BC3 - Basque Centre for Climate Change) have published an article related to their NDC ASPECTS work in The Conversation (in Spanish). The authors suggest that stronger ambition is needed on climate action and underline the importance of a sectoral perspective and of addressing fossil fuel dependence.
